What will your mobile workforce do if their principal forms of communication are unavailable? We take it for granted that mobile connectivity and signals are more reliant and available than they have ever been. But how many businesses have a continuity strategy for when the mobile network is disrupted?

O2 Data Network Fault
On Monday O2′s data network was out of action for eight hours due to an air conditioning fault at one of their data sites. The over-heating of their data connectivity technology in two of their nodes left several parts of the UK with intermittent or no connectivity.

Flexible Strategy Is Key
Whether used for computers or mobile phones, lack of connectivity can cause delays and problems for unpredictable amounts of time. If important documentation or emails need to be sent on a particular day then that mobile employee needs to be able to connect elsewhere should their main connection be down. This is where the policy of flexible working comes into play. If that employee can whizz into a remote office and connect via an alternative broadband provider, and can have their phone calls diverted to a landline phone, the downtime is minimised.

Business Continuity Strategy
What this means in reality is that organisations should not be relying on one supplier of connectivity for voice and data, but rather they should be employing diverse methods of connectivity to cope with any number of unpredictable situations.

What would you do?
I’d be interested to hear what your organisation has put in place to cope with mobile network faults…
