Gordon Brown today outlined plans for £1 billion of extra investment in fast broadband connectivity to all parts of the uk, urban and rural areas alike. An essential investment, he believes, for the future prosperity of the UK.

Perfectly timed as businesses reap daily losses due to severe weather disrupting both schools and companies, Mr Brown argues in the Telegraph today, providing investment in fast broadband will offer the benefits of being able to work from home or hold a consultation with your GP. Dangling speeds 50 times faster than those experienced today as a carrott in front of the politically disillusioned eyes of UK citizens and corporates, Brown cites advantages to both employees, employers, the economy, and even society in general:

“Teleworking can mean more job opportunities, for example, for the disabled and those with child-care responsibilities who wish to work part-time – or allow someone to take a job with a firm based too far away for a daily commute – while also improving work-life balance for many.”

As an evangelist for teleworking this comes as welcome news, though it may be hard to hear news to those suffering as a direct result of the debt that this country finds itself engulfed by, wondering how a government in such turmoil can promise such an investment. But what the government is doing here is making it even easier for businesses and service providers such as local authorities to provide seamless and continuous service, regardless of snow, flood or any other hazard which prevents employees from getting to their normal place of work. In addition it helps provide the means for an increased demographic to remain in or enter into the workplace which can only benefit our economy.
